Koh Phangan is bigger and more spread out than most people expect, and the area you pick shapes the whole trip. Why Ban Tai works as a base
Ban Tai sits on the south coast, roughly between the ferry pier and the Full Moon Party. That middle position is the point: you are about 10 minutes from Thong Sala pier and about 15 minutes from Haad Rin, both by taxi or scooter, without living inside either of them.
It is a relaxed, largely local stretch of road with restaurants, small shops and a calm beach, rather than a strip of party bars. From Bunkhouse the beach is about two minutes on foot. If you plan to see more of the island than one beach, a scooter is worth renting, because the good spots are genuinely spread out.
Getting to and around the island
- Arriving: almost everyone arrives by ferry into Thong Sala, usually from Koh Samui or Surat Thani on the mainland.
- From Koh Samui Airport: a taxi to the pier plus a ferry crossing. Allow at least an hour of travel and check sailing times, since the ferry schedule drives the whole journey.
- Getting around: scooters are the normal way to move about. Taxis and songthaews run too, and reception can book them.
